Visiting Jewish Heritage in Padova, Italy

On a stiflingly hot day a couple weeks ago, I spent an afternoon in Padova (Padua), Italy, visiting some of the centuries-old Jewish heritage sites in the city -- they are being developed now as both a resource for local people and as an attractive itinerary for tourists and other visitors.

The sites I visited included the new Museo della Padova Ebraica (Museum of Jewish Padova) which opened in June. As I wrote on the Jewish Heritage Europe web site ahead of the opening, it is housed in the former “German,” synagogue, Sinagoga Tedesca, used by the Ashkenazic community, which was inaugurated in 1525 in the heart of the Jewish quarter, or ghetto, in the city’s historic center.  (Note -- part of this post is a repost of my article on Jewish Heritage Europe.)

The synagogue, on via delle Piazze, was severely damaged during World War II when it was torched by local Fascists, and it stood derelict until it was completely rebuilt in 1998 (the ark was transferred to Tel Aviv in 1956). The museum exhibition includes before and after photos.

The exhibit includes items from the Jewish community’s extensive collection of Judaica objects from past centuries to the present. Among them are a very rare Mameluk parochet from Egypt dating back to the 15th or 16th century.

There is also an 18th century Megillah of Esther,  a 16th century Torah scroll, exceptional silver torah ornaments, and several ketubot. A backlit photographic reproduction of the Ark occupies the space where the Ark once stood — the ark now being in Tel Aviv.

Two films are included in the exhibition. One is a general introduction to the history of the community. The other — projected on the walls of the sanctuary where the exhibit is located — tells the story of Padova Jews through the life stories of several prominent members of the community over the past five centuries or so, portrayed by actors. I was somewhat dismayed that this film does not include reference to any women in Padova Jewish history....perhaps there were no famous women, but it was the women who kept the community alive, and I believe that their role must also be highlighted, even if it simply means through exhibits dealing with food and marriage customs.....

Other sites I visited included the 16th century  Italian rite synagogue, which is still used by the small local Jewish community, and the Jewish cemetery on via Wiel — dating from the 16th century and the oldest of the five Jewish cemeteries in the city. (You can download an article about these cemeteries HERE.)

The sanctuary of the Italian synagogue is a small, rather long and narrow space, with an elaborately carved Ark and a delicate wooden Bimah positioned to face each other from the middle of the long sides of the room. The Bimah is believed to have been carved from the wood of a single tree that fell in the botanical gardens.

The Jewish cemetery behind a high brick wall in via Wiel, in central Padova near the Old Town and of ghetto, has been restored and is beautifully maintained by the Jewish community. Opened in 1529, with more than 90 16th century tombs, it is the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Padova and one of  five Jewish cemeteries that remain in the city. (Fragments from two 15th century gravestones from a cemetery destroyed in 1509 are displayed in the city museum).

The most famous people buried there are Me’ir Katzenellenbogen, or Maharam, a renowned Ashkenazic rabbi who died in 1565, and his son, Samuel Judah, who succeeded him and died in 1597.

Mainly because of them, Padova is believed to be the only place in Italy where devout followers make pilgrimages to the tombs of their masters. Indeed, Jewish community leaders say that these pilgrims often do not contact the Jewish community to obtain the key to the cemetery, but climb over the wall to pray, leave kvittlach (written messages) and light candles.

Katzenellenbogen gravestones are (rather charmingly) marked by the crest of a crouching Cat (“Katze” in German).

Another noted personality interred here is Anselmo Del Banco (Asher Levi Meshullam) who died in 1532. A powerful banker (owner of several loan-banks in the Venice area), he was the head of the Jewish community in Venice and represented the community when in 1516 the authorities decreed that Jews there must live in a ghetto. His gravestone is notable for its fine and unusual carving.

Kaede Ikuza Japanese Restaurant at Taman Molek, Johor Bahru.

Normally those fried chicken widely available around Johor Bahru area are...Malay warong fried chicken, Mamak shop fried chicken, Chinese fried chicken, fast food fried chicken and fried chicken serve with nasi lemak is very common. But now I came across this Japanese fried chicken which is just started at Taman Molek, JB...

Kaede Ikuza Japanese Restaurant (N1.52428 E103.78540) is located along Jalan Molek 1/28, next to the Mama Nyonya Food Restaurant.

The setting is as simple as the local 'kopitiam' style, kitchen just next to the dining area. And yes, the prices also follow the 'kopitiam' price.

As far as I know, this is the 'first' Japanese kopitiam available in Johor Bahru. Most of the Japanese restaurants are well decorated with air-conditioning in Johor Bahru, but this is really something new to the JB market.
The imported fruits from Japan also available from the restaurant, as you can see from the photos below...

Looks like the melon (correct me if I'm wrong)

Most of their main course is serve with the fried rice...
We ordered the Karaage chicken (Japanese fried chicken) set, Toriten set (chicken tempura), tomato omelet set, garlic pork set and Ra-so-men.

Beside the main course, we ordered some of their side dish too...
Salads, Spicy cucumber and Combination tempura.

Combination tempura
(chicken, mushroom, pumpkin, kakiage, okura, eggplant and sweet potato)

All foods were tasty!
I like the 'boneless Karaage chicken' very much! Maybe because we already familiar with the fried chicken taste surrounding us, and this was really new and nice! The spicy cucumber got my attention too, the Japanese recipe of the sauce was unique, we all like it!

All the foods serve in this restaurant are having reasonable price, about RM10-20, that means we can enjoy the Japanese food by the Japanese chef with the street food price! No kidding!

The restaurant was operating by 90% of the Japanese, and the kitchen too. This is another new to Johor Bahru, because most of the Japanese restaurants within JB only the chef or the owner are 'Nihonjin'...other are local or foreign workers...I was impressed. We visited on the first day operation of the restaurant, and it was full of Japanese. Great!

The photos of the Chefs (or so called the spirits of the kitchen) on duty!

And I met a group of cute little boys in the restaurant too...

I will be back again for the Karaage chicken, and also like to explore more of the 'authentic' Japanese food from this 'Japanese kopitiam'.

Vietnam - Eat and Walk in Hanoi

Hanoi - Feb 2015

After settling down our luggage, the hotel staff gave us a thorough brief on where to go and what to eat around the vicinity. Our Essence Hanoi hotel was located in the heart of Old Quarter (their town area) so all the places are within walking distance.

1) Bun Cha (grilled pork and noodle)

Our hotel staff suggested Bun Cha which was just around the corner for our lunch.

If it wasn't strongly recommended by hotel staff, I doubt we would step into this stall at all.

Actually, we did not know what bun cha was and we also did not know how to order. We just told the stall lady four bun cha and she nodded.

Basically, it is like grilled fatty pork. There are different type of meat in this bowl.

It came with vegetables and noodles. How to eat bun cha is similar to how to eat japanese soba. Take the noodles, dip in the soup and put it in your mouth. For the vegetable, you can eat it raw or put them into the soup. The grilled meat is actually quite fragrant.

2) Egg coffee

I have been looking forward to this traditional vietnamese coffee when my friends told me to try if I ever go Vietnam. To my surprise, egg coffee is not very well known in Hanoi as it is only available in selective coffee shop.

We passed by this cafe while we were finding high and low for a famous coffee shop that was recommended on a blogshop but turned out it did not has the egg coffee. Hence, we went back to this cozy cafe and we were so glad that we did because their egg coffee was AWESOME!

Surprisingly, we were their only customers lol

Egg coffee! It was basically made of egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk and coffee. The top layer was the egg yoke hand whisked till like cream and it was super smooth when we took the first sip. I instantly fell in love with it.

We came back again on our last day!

Actually on our last day, we went to another cafe that served different type of egg coffee. These are normal egg coffee, egg coffee with rum, ice egg coffee and lastly egg cocoa. They tasted so different and horrible! Then we went back to the very first cafe before we depart. #hardcore #noregret

3) Banh Xeo (crispy Pancakes)

We have been eating and eating the moment we touched down. Since all the places that we noted down were all nearby, so we decided to conquer food with small portion to have a quick taste of Hanoi before we rush off to Halong Bay the next morning.

Banh Xeo is served with rice wrapper and lots varieties of vegetable on the side. As usual, we did not know how to eat it. We cut the pancake into fours, put one piece with vegetable on the rice wrapper and dip with the fish sauce. It tasted quite yummy!

4) Hoan Kiem Lake ("Lake of the Returned Sword")

We went for a walk to nearby Hoan Kien Lake before we head back to the night market for shopping and food again.

This is the Huc Bridge aka the Morning Sunlight Bridge where many couples go there for photoshoot.

It was a very nice walk around the lake as they have invested greatly on the pretty flowers along the lake.

Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa) is sitting in the middle of the lake.

5) Hoa Lo Prison Museum

We had some time to spare before night market starts at 7pm so we went to visit Hoa Lo Prison Museum. Basically, it was used for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. It is really not my kind of thing. It is just too creepy for me so a no no for photo.

Then we walked back to Old Quarter for night market.

Lots of motorcycles started to roam around. How to cross the road? Close your eyes and motorists will avoid you.

6) Bami vietnamese sandwich

We stopped for a snack again.

It may look like a normal sandwich but the bread was toasted just nice and the meat was very tasty even though there was no sauce at all. After buying two sandwiches, the vietnamese girl passed us a buy-two-get-one-free card.... lol she could have just give us a free sandwich lah...

7) Pho

Anyway, luckily we did not have the third sandwich so we were able to buy this bowl of Pho seated just beside the bami sandwich stall.

Pho with chicken meat. It looks very plain but it tasted exactly like chicken rice OMG! I really really like this! It was not oily at all I swear! We were having this hot and yummy Pho in drizzling weather, how can life get even better than this?

6) Weekend night market at Old Quarter (7pm to 11pm)

I love going to night market. They usually sell the most quirky stuff that will cannot be seen in shopping malls. The weekend night market only opens from Friday to Sunday 7pm till 11pm - It is a long stretch of streets from Hang Dao to Dong Xuan Market.

Backview of a Vietnamese lady wearing traditional clothing is their iconic image of Vietnam.

I don't know why but I particularly love pretty plates.

Stalls pretty much repeated themselves. It reminds me of Women's Market in Hong Kong.

I bought a down material jacket for only ~S$13! *hehe

On our way back to the hotel, we saw groups of people crowded around at one road intersection. Being a curious Singaporean, we walked towards the intersection and saw that they were actually sitting on a small stool surrounding a tiny table holding on beers.

I guess this is their clubbing street.

This was just a street away from the clubbing street.

7) Cha Ca (Vietnamese Turmeric Fish with Dill)

Hotel staff strongly recommended this as this is the one of the 101 food to eat before you die. Hence, we searched high and low for this restaurant on our last day. We have braved through the cold wind and thank God for google map.

This is actually quite hard to find if you do not have google map or anyone to direct you as this is not near the main town area.

We went in the restaurant and ordered 4 set meals. Apparently this restaurant only sells Cha Ca which made ordering so much easier. Then the waiter arranged our tables nicely with all the ingredient and the grilled fish and left the table. We were looking at one another with one question in our mind : "erm.. what do we do now?"

Then the waiter came back and started cooking right in front of us.

End product! He was very considerate that he taught us how to eat this dish. First take the fish with dill and spring onion into your bowl, then add rice vermicelli, peanut on your table and the last step is to add fish sauce! I must say that this indeed one of the 100 dishes you must try.

Goodbye, Hanoi. I will want to come back again for egg coffee and cha ca!
