The pineapple cake has a perfect balance of the sweetness and slight sourish tinge, excellent taste of the pineapple and not forget the nice aroma within. This pineapple cake is different from those available around us, not overly sweet and with a balance butter taste, it actually changed my usual impression.

(Part 2) Malaysia - Penang 槟城 : Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion + Peranakan Mansion + Street art

Penang trip Jan 2013

Continue from (Part 1) Malaysia - Penang 槟城 : Penang Hill + Kek Lok Si Temple

We walked quite a far bit in this trip so please prepare a good walking shoes if you would like to experience the heritages places and houses. Also, spam alot of sunscreen on yourselves and bring along your sunglasses or umbrella. Hot hot hot weather.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is also known as Blue Mansion due to its exterior colour of the building. You may want to visit this mansion at specific timings (11am, 1.30pm and 3pm) when tour is provided to understand more about the history. This mansion has won many awards for its very well preserved architecture. One of the awards is UNESCO 'Most Excellent' Heritage Conservation Award. If you are a person who loves cultural stuff, you should totally check this out!

Cheong Fatt Tze was a prominent Chinese figure (basically a very very rich man) who built this mansion to house nine generations of his descendants. Rich and very fortunate man.

Though many furniture were destroyed during World War II, a group of Penang conservationists worked very hard with Artisans and master craftsmen to use original materials to rebuild the house to its former glory.  Many furniture were shipped from as far as Scotland.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion

You must not missed this Peranakan Mansion in Penang.

Today, this mansion showcases the lavish lifestyle of the Peranakans (the Baba and the Nyonya), their cultures/traditions and even displaying many antiques and collectibles of this unique community.

You can guess how rich they were by looking at the material they used for on their doors.

toilet

Did I also mention that this was the place for our very famous local drama - 小娘惹 Little Nyonya.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion
Address: 29, Church Street, 10200 Penang, Malaysia.
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday including Public Holidays from 9:30 am to 5 pm
Entrance fee: RM 10
Guided tours at 11.30 am and 3.30pm

Street art

Street art is one of the highlights in Penang! I love this part the most! Only managed to visit the below. When I go back to Penang again, I would want to see all the street arts!

Trishaw man

Kungfu girl

Boy on chair

Kids on bicycle

For the street arts location, you may want to go to HERE to see all the pictures and locations before you plan your walking.

When I googled about the street art designer, then I realised that Singapore has 2 street art done by him!
Check his web out HERE and see where in Singapore you can spot his work!

Then bf saw his favourite and asked me take a picture for him. If you look carefully, there is no back part of the bicycle.

Perak is just a bridge away from Penang. Other than taking the bridge, cars can be shipped using ferry between Perak and Penang with passangers on it! So cool~ my grandma stays in Perak.

This is another ferry fetching cars to Penang

Our timing was so good to catch sunset

Good bye Penang~

Thanks Jovene and Eugene for your photo contribution..

(Part 1) Malaysia - Penang 槟城 : Penang Hill + Kek Lok Si Temple

Penang trip Jan 2013

Do you know that Penang - George Town is now on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site? O.O Believe it is because of it's multicultural history as well as many well-preserved heritage buildings. Penang is also known as "The Pearl of the Orient 东方花园".

We checked in to one of the boutique heritage hotels in George Town which is only 5 minutes walk to 1st Avenue shopping mall and 10 minutes walk to heritage areas. This hotel was very cozy and the service staffs there were very passionate and kept smiling to you like you are their friends.

Noordin Mews

Cozy as it is, isnt it? During my 2 nights stay, all I did before bed was to lie on the sofa, surf the net and enjoy the romantic setting by the pool. Maybe also because the wifi connection was the best at the pool area. lol

Lobby. Very Peranakan feel

Cafe area

Single room - interiors are inspired by old Shanghai of the 1950s

Behind the door is the shower room. Btw, the sofa is damn so comfy!

Family room - they have 2 double beds, 1 single bed, 1 living room and 2 toilets. O,O

Penang Hill 升旗山

Penang Hill is also known as Bukit Bendera in Malay Language and is one of the famous tourist attractions in Penang. It stands at 833 meters above sea level. You can have a mesmerizing and panoramic view of the whole penang. It is also a popular holiday retreat location for its cooling weather as compared to the city beneath it. I bet the view looks even more amazing when at night.

I guess if you love nature or hiking, you would love to visit Penang Hill to enjoy the cooling weather, the nature and take scenic photos. Otherwise, you may want to miss this.

Penang Hill 升旗山
Address: 215 Macalister Road 10450, Penang Hill at Air Hitam
Direction: Take cab or Transit Link bus numbered 1 or 101 to get to Ayer Itam Terminal.

Kek Lok Si Temple 极乐寺

Kek Lok Si Temple is the biggest temple in South East Asia and is located just next to Penang Hill. The main attraction is the huge bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy. The best time to visit is during Chinese Lunar New Year where the temple is filled with pretty latterns and glittering lights. It is best not to drive up as it will be a mega jam starting from the bottom of the hill to the temple. We were jam-queuing for more than 2 hours ~.~ but totally worth it!

Outdoor carpark

Outside view of the Goddess of Mercy status

 Wishing ribbons

Magnificent night view from the temple of whole Penang

Kek Lok Si Temple 极乐寺
Address: No. 1, Tokong Kek Lok Si, 11500, George Town, Pulau Pinang Malaysia
Direction: Take cab or Rapid Penang Bus Route numbered U201, U203, U204, U206 or U502

Anyway, I will not recommend to take bus. Point 1 : the bus drivers were all not v helpful in giving direction or advising which stop to alight for our destination. Point 2 : The bus interval was very irregular. I think is see the bus driver's mood? And I do not think I will need point 3. Just take cab especially you have 4 people in your group or more.

See you tomorrow, Penang..
